Rocky Mountain Road Trip Day One

Rocky Mountain Road Trip Day One

LARAMIE, WY - Greetings from the high plains country of southern Wyoming...I'm traveling with Coach John Brady's A-State basketball team for the next few days as they get set to take on the Wyoming Cowboys Saturday afternoon, and then the Colorado Buffaloes on Monday evening down in Boulder.

I'll be filling in behind the mic for Matt Stolz for these two games as he remains in Jonesboro for this weekend's pivotal SBC football showdown with Texas State at Liberty Bank Stadium.

It's been a long and tiresome day for this basketball team and it's traveling party. The Red Wolves left Jonesboro at 5:30 a.m. under dark and rainy skies, busing to Little Rock for a 9 o'clock flight to Denver.

After arriving at one of the largest and busiest airports in the world around 11 (CST), we boarded a tour bus a short time later for our two-hour trek north to Laramie. It had pretty much been a bang-bang trip until that point...by the time we got our boarding passes and got through TSA security in Little Rock, it was time to board.

One interesting footnote...one of the first people I encountered as soon as we got to our gate was UALR head coach Steve Shields. The Trojans were departing for a two-game trip to Florida and Middle Tennessee.

Meanwhile the bus trip from Denver to Laramie was interesting...watching the terrain slowly change from flat prairies with the Rockies majestically looming off in the distance, to rolling prairie land dotted with cattle ranches and giant wind turbines shortly after we crossed into Wyoming, where I also spotted a herd of about 15 antelope playing and grazing just a few yards from the highway.

As we got closer to Laramie, we found ourselves in higher country, at an elevation of approximately 8,600 feet, with scattered snow on the ground and rocky buttes.

After checking into our hotel, it's been a much needed afternoon of rest and relaxation for all of us.

I ran into junior point guard Rakeem Dickerson on the elevator about an hour ago, and even him, a division one athlete, remarked on how tired he was. But these guys will hit the practice floor just a few minutes from now, in preparation for tomorrow afternoon's 2 (CST) o'clock tip-off with the 1-1 Cowboys at the Arena-Auditorium as part of the Global Sports Main Event.

Let's hope they've got their legs back under 'em by then.
