It started early. And it never got much better. The Arkansas State Red Wolves were dominated by the Memphis Tigers 31-7 at the Liberty Bowl Saturday afternoon in Memphis.

The Tigers (1-2) scored on their first two drives and steamrolled the Red Wolves in their final meeting for a while. ASU had won four of five coming into the game but the dominance in the series ended early.

“We are disappointed in the result of the game,” said coach Bryan Harsin. “First of all, give credit to Memphis. They made plays and some explosive plays, and we didn’t do that enough. They started fast. We knew they would have an intensity level that we had to go out there and match early on.

“Our guys played hard and didn’t quit, we fought out there. In games like this, it comes down to making plays, and that’s the bottom line. And they made more plays. Each and every week we are going to get everybody’s best.”

After the Tigers built the 14-0 lead, A-State (2-2) produced a quick-snap, no-huddle 59-yard drive that ended with as J.D. McKissic scored on a 15-yard pass from Fredi Knighten with 5:03 left in the quarter. Brian Davis’ nailed the extra point kick with 5:03 to go in the quarter.

That was pretty much it for the Red Wolves. The Tigers led 24-7 at halftime.

Memphis finished with 505 yards offense, 329 of that rushing.

The Red Wolves finished with 255 yards offense, just 74 yards on the ground. Memphis gave A-State 12 plays that produced negative yards.

Adam Kennedy completed 20-of-37 passes for 166 yards. He was sacked seven times.

Julian Jones caught 6 passes for 59 yards in the game to lead all receivers.

The Red Wolves play at Mizzou on Saturday.
