Atwood Draws Offer

Willie Atwood played three years of high school ball at Memphis Melrose. His senior season he played at West Memphis. And even though he had been on the Arkansas State campus, the 6-foot-8, 225-pound junior college forward was surprised by what he saw during an unofficial visit last week.

"It was very nice," he said. "I was surprised that is was like it was. I liked everything up there."

On an unofficial visit this week, Atwood, who now attends Connors (Okla.) Junior College, got to watch the Red Wolves practice as they prepped for their exhibition tournament in Canada next week. He has been offered a scholarship by the Red Wolves.

"I got to see how they play and I liked it," he said. "Their head coach (John Brady) spent a lot of time talking to me and telling me he can help me get to the next level. He has coached a lot of guys who play my position who are in the NBA." As a senior at West Memphis, Atwood said he averaged 14 points and 9 rebounds while earning all-conference honors.

At Connors last season, he averaged 10.6 points and 7 rebounds contest.

"I had some big games, where I scored 25, but after that I started getting double teams and teams started focusing on stopping me. That made my average drop."

Atwood, who went from 175 to 210 pounds in college, said he has made an unofficial visit to Oklahoma and he participated in McMullen's Top 100 Juco Showcase in St. Louis last month.

"It was neat,'' he said. "They had guys there from everywhere, California, Florida and Canada. I think I did all right."

No other visits are planned at this time.

"I know the ASU coaches as want me back for an official visit,'' he said. "My coach at Connors said there are a lot of schools calling me about visiting."

As far as signing, he said "I will probably wait until the spring and see how my season goes. Getting closer to home could be a factor. I know my mom wants to get to see me play and Connors is five hours away."
