Media Day Re-cap

We know now that the six candidates for the starting quarterback job for the Arkansas State Red Wolves are real. We got to meet them, shake their hands, and interview them on Thursday at Media Day.

And although coach Bryan Harsin didn't say it in such words but it is not going to be a common practice.

At least not for now.

So seniors Phillip Butterfield and Adam Kennedy, junior Chandler Rogers, sophomores Stephen Hogan and Fredi Knighten and true freshman Cameron Birse were all in the same place, at pretty much the same time, for us all to meet.

They all said the right things. They look forward to the competition, etc.

It will make for an interesting camp, and Harsin said he expects to have an idea who the starting quarterback, or at least the leaders is, by the second scrimmage.

Harsin said early on there will be a lot of times when the Red Wolves will line up ones vs. ones to get an indication of where the team stands.

The practices open Friday with three two-a-day sessions. After that one practice a day with lots of meetings.

"This is the one time we really don’t have a lot of restrictions on time as far as what we can do meeting wise and practice wise because once you get into the season you’re limited to your 20 hours,” said Harsin. “We try to get as much done as we can during this time and we try to keep guys here as long as we can to be around them and get ourselves prepared for the upcoming season. That’s where our mindset is at right now and we’re looking forward to getting out on the field and doing our jobs tomorrow.”

Fan appreciation day, called A-State Fan Fest, will be Saturday, Aug.17 at 1 p.m. it is the only open practice of the pre-season.

When asked if he knew where Arkansas was before hearing from Arkansas State, senior transfer quarterback Adam Kennedy smiled and admitted, he and the coaches at Utah State "spread a big map of Arkansas out on a table and found Jonesboro."

Freshman quarterback Cameron Birse was born in England but moved to Southern California when he was 2. The family moved to Maryland, then back to SoCal in recent years.
