The new-look Sun Belt Conference became official today, as the 37-year-old league formally welcomed newcomers Georgia State, Texas State and Texas-Arlington, while at the same time said goodbye to outgoing members Florida International, Florida Atlantic, Middle Tennessee and North Texas.

Sun Belt Commissioner Karl Benson appeared on AstAteNation Radio today and said he's excited and optimistic about the league's future, which will also welcome Appalachian State and Georgia Southern as full members in 2014, and Idaho and New Mexico State as football-only members.

Benson stressed the importance of television to the league, saying "Prior to my arrival, the Sun Belt entered into an extension with ESPN, and we hope to continue to grow our ESPN relationship."

The commissioner was also asked about the possibility of securing additional football bowl bids for the league. The SBC has been in discussions with at least two possible new bowl games that may be realities in time for the 2014 season.

"I think progressing is the best way to describe that situation at this time." Benson specifically mentioned future bowl games in Little Rock and Montgomery, AL as good possibilities for games w/Sun Belt tie-ins, and also said another potential new bowl game in Orlando could have a Sun Belt connection.

"I'm optimistic that 2014 will have a full compliment of Sun Belt teams in bowls," he added.

Meanwhile, ASU A.D. Terry Mohajir was also on today's radio program, and mentioned that the school and athletic department has had conversations with officials of the Jonesboro Municipal Airport about what steps would be needed to enlarge the runway and flight line to accommodate larger aircraft that would allow the school's sports teams to take charter flights in and out of Jonesboro.

For several years, most ASU charter flights that require larger planes have originated at Memphis International Airport, requiring teams to bus to and from Memphis for those flights.

Randy Myers is the co-host of AstAteNation Radio. The program airs Monday-Friday from 11-1 on The Ticket 970am/95.3fm and on the web at 953theticket.com.
