Ota Picks Red Wolves
But there are no plans for the Red Wolves to place the 6-foot-2, 285-pound defensive tackle in the backfield.
Tuesday night, Ota, who plays at Jonesboro High School, became the fifth commitment for the Red Wolves, their second from Arkansas.
"I am pretty sure they will have me on the defensive line at tackle or noseman,'' he said. Over the years he has spent a lot of time along the offense and defensive line.
"When I was a sophomore I played on the offensive line and I was not very good," he said. "We decided I need to play on the defensive line."
At first on the end, he moved inside last year because he knew that would be his position in college.
He said last week he made up his mind to commit to ASU after meeting with his parents and Jonesboro Hurricane coach Randy Coleman.
"My dad was out of town on business so I wanted to wait until he was back," he said. "Arkansas State told me I was their No. 1 target and I wanted to go ahead and commit to them. They showed me a lot of support."
Ota said "all of the coaches" recruited him. He called Harsin Tuesday night with official word. "Man I feel better now,'' he said.
Ota, who said he plans to study pre-med, was courted by several school and received offers from Alabama-Birmingham and Yale.
He earned Class 6A All-State honors last season and has been an all-conference pick for two straight seasons.
