Cari White, Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for the Chamber, appeared on AstAteNation Radio today to promote the event, which will formally kick-off on the afternoon of August 27 with a red & black balloon launch and mayoral proclamation at Fox Meadow Elementary School. That event will begin a series of week-long activities culminated by the Red Wolves' August 31 season opener against Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
"We're also asking participating businesses this year to offer Red Wolf (discount) specials during the week," White said, explaining that the local business community benefits greatly from each home game at Liberty Bank Stadium with the large number of out-of-town visitors that make their way to Jonesboro for the games and tailgating. "For every dollar spent around a home game, that dollar turns over seven times in the community," she said, adding that "a lot of people come from all over the state and the region for our home football games."
One notable change for this year's Paint The Town Red campaign is the change in date and location of the Big Great A-StAte Tailgate party. In recent years, this popular event featuring coaches, players, pep squads and the Sound of the Natural State Marching Band has been held on Friday nights prior to the home opener, in downtown Jonesboro, but this year's version will move to Tailgate City, adjacent to Liberty Bank Stadium on Thursday night, August 29, beginning at 5:30 p.m. White said the reason for the change is in order to better accommodate fans who might otherwise be at a high school game on Friday nights, as well as making it more accessible for ASU students. On the same evening, the annual Order of the Pack ceremony will take place at 7 p.m. inside the stadium.
"Celebrity judging" for the area businesses that decorate for Paint The Town Red will take place on August 28 from 1-4 p.m. T-shirts will also be offered for employees of participating businesses.
