ASTATE BIRTHDATE - Dwane Brown – May 7th
Championship game in 1986. From 1984-1987, Arkansas State was 38-14-2 and finished with ranking of 10th, 6th, 2nd and 12th nationally in the NCAA polls during his reign as QB.
Brown was the called by Larry Lacewell, "the premier quarterback in the Southland conference and the best wishbone QB in the country". During Brown's tenure at Arkansas State he ended his career with very impressive numbers: 5,672 yards of total offense (No. 2 in ASU history at the time), 3,480 yards passing (Also No. 2 at the time) and 2,192 yards rushing (Top rushing quarterback in ASU history to this day). Brown was the top rushing QB in the league all four years.
The 5'9 180 slgnal caller took Jonesboro by storm from year one, being named the SLC Freshman of the Year in 1984. In 1985, Brown was named honorable mention All SLC which prompted Lacewell to make the statement that Dwane "not making all conference, was a joke!" That may have sparked some fire under him because he was named the SLC Offensive Player of the year in 1986 leading the Indians to the National Championship game and a 12-2-1 season. Both in 1986 and 1987, Dwayne was named AP honorable mention All American and was SLC All-Conference in both seasons as well.
Brown was a surgeon with the ball. He would stick it into the pocket of the fullback, pull it out and take it around the end, carving up defenses before they knew what happened. In the 4 years that Brown led the Indian offense, ASU was in the top 5 rushing teams in the country each season. No. 15 finished his career with 33 rushing touchdowns, which is still tied for second all-time and first among quarterbacks.
For many of us the run that ASU football had in the 1980s was our part of our introduction into Arkansas State fandom. Dwane Brown was a major catalyst in that run. Today, May 7th, is Dwane's Birthday and we want all of AStateNation to join together in wishing one of the A-State Greats a Happy Birthday.
