Murphy becomes No.1 for Malzahn 2014

Draequon Murphy became the first commitment for Gus Malzahn and his coaching staff for the Class of 2014 when the talented athlete from Montgomery Carver HS pulled the trigger Saturday after an unofficial visit.

Gus Malzahn continues to do things at Arkansas State University that has never been done before.

This continued here Saturday when Alabama athlete Draequon Murphy decided to pick the Red Wolves to become the first commitment for Malzahn and ASU in their recruiting Class of 2014.

AStateNation.com spoke to Murphy about his recent decision.

"I had a great visit there today," Murphy said. "They offered me earlier this summer. I'm sold on their coaching staff."

Murphy, a 6-foot-0, 200 pound athlete who runs a 4.49 forty, plays wide out, quarterback and safety for his Montgomery Carver HS football team.

"Arkansas State is recruiting me as an athlete," Murphy said. I really liked their coaching staff a lot. Coach Lashlee is a great coach and a great recruiter."

Murphy is also impressed with what Coach Malzahn is building at ASU.

"They have plans for new facilities, and I really like the direction of the program under Coach Malzahn," Murphy said. "It's going to be one of the top mid major programs in the South."
